Nellie and Chloe win all thier matches at England v Ireland challenge

England’s Under 16 produced a performance to match the setting when they ran out winners against Ireland this weekend on the stunning links of Royal Birkdale.

A 21.5-8.5 victory was reward for two days of excellent golf from an England team comprising six boys and six girls drawn from eight counties across the country.

The road to victory began with a fine show in the Saturday morning foursomes – England winning five of the six games to take a commanding lead into the afternoon singles.

Norfolk’s Chloe Tarbard and Nellie Ong won their match followed by the pairing of Amelia Wan from Nottinghamshire and Surrey's Matilde Santilli.

The girls made it a hat-trick when Cheshire’s Imogen Williamson and Isla McDonald O’Brien from Shropshire won their game.

For the boys, the pairings of Kris Kim (Surrey) and Drew Sykes (Sussex) and Ben Bolton (Staffordshire) and James Brash (Surrey) found the winning formula.

The form was repeated later in the day when – from 12 singles played - the team won eight games and halved two.

Winners in the singles included Ong, Wan, Tarbard, Williamson, Santilli, Essex’s Charlie Croker, Kim and Brash. The half points were supplied by Bolton and Surrey’s Monty Holcombe.

Sunday’s 12 singles produces some more excellent golf in tricky conditions.

This time seven wins and a halved match was the English haul from the 12 games on the course.

The points for England were supplied by Williamson, Kim, Bolton, Ong, Tarbard, Sykes and Holcombe. Nottinghamshire’s Wan posted half a point.

All players deserve credit for their performance, but Williamson, Kim, Ong and Tarbard can be thrilled with a 100% record from their three games.
