Junior Round-Up of 2020

2020 has not been the year we planned, however, this did not hold back our juniors.

The year got off to a good start with our first winter training session in January at Mattishall with Tony Varney. Attended by over 20 girls who wanted to improve their game, the session included: golf games and skills’ challenges as well as friendly competitive interaction.

This was to be only one of the four winter training sessions which took place due to COVID and the first lockdown.

All County championships and events were cancelled, however, our juniors continued to work on their game and enter club and national competitions, producing some great results.

In July and October six selected girls attended specialist coaching with Paul Ashwell at St Ives, funded by NLCGA and club donations, which included short game and mental strategies.

There was also putting coaching with Chase Davis at Eaton where he set the girls’ objectives to work on asking them to feedback progress.

Chloe Gibbs, Eve Neild, Chloe Tarbard and Nellie Ong girls qualified for the England Golf East Region Girls’ Squad programme with Roly Hitchcock at Stoke by Nayland. These four girls took up half of the eight places which demonstrates the talent of our Norfolk juniors considering there are five other counties whose juniors are eligible for this squad.

Rebecca Chesterman has had a fabulous season at Hunstanton winning a host of trophies:

Junior/Adult Foursomes Competition with her uncle, Ladies’ Rose Bowl competition, Ladies’ Vera Thompson Trophy, Junior Carrington-Smith Trophy and Most Improved Lady Golfer.

Maisie Beales won the Calvert Cup at Middleton Hall and the Molly Fletcher Trophy at Hunstanton. Sister Poppy won the Rose Bowl and Junior Club Championship at Middleton Hall and will be the 2021 County Junior Captain.

Chloe Tarbard set a new course record at Heacham Manor with 4 under par.

Mary Keen from Royal Cromer won their Division One Handicap Ladies’ Championship and as Junior Captain started up a 'Sun-day Fun-day' for newly beginning juniors, which resulted in some budding new golfers.

Eve Neild and Nellie Ong competed in the England Golf Girls’ U18 Championship at Sandy Lodge Golf Club in Hertfordshire. To qualify to play in this event is an achievement in itself as competition is fierce with a maximum handicap limit of 9.4. Both girls are only 16 and this was the first time Nellie had played in a National competition.

Hettie Conway from Mattishall won the Norfolk Junior Handicap Challenge with the greatest improvement on handicap, reducing from 25 – 16.

The divisional winners were:

Division 1: Chloe Tarbard from Heacham Manor 6 to 3 and Nellie Ong from Eaton 7 to 4
Division 2: Lilia Copeman from Bawburgh 16 to 1
Division 3: Hattie Conway from Mattishall 25 to 16
Division 4 :Maisie Beales from Middleton Hall 31 to 26

At the end of the 2020 we now have nine girls playing off single figures ranging from nine to three handicap: Chloe Gibbs, Eve Neild, Chloe Tarbard, Nellie Ong, Polly Norman, Pippa Hill, Poppy Beales, Doris Thomas and Ruby Patterson.

To sum up the year, County Junior Organiser Sherrell Chuter said “It has been fantastic to see the passion our girls have for the game and how they have used their time in this difficult year to practise and develop their games, but most importantly enjoying their golf”.
