Tracey and Amelia Williamson are looking to make a little bit of history for England this week at the Home Internationals.

The Norfolk mother and daughter golfing duo were thrilled to both earn call-ups for their respective England squads earlier this month.

Mum Tracey will make her England debut in the senior men’s and women’s series while daughter Amelia is trying to continue her proud winning record for the women’s squad.

Normally the events are held at different times of the year and at different venues.

This year – with The R&A having to plan well in advance and structure events differently due to the ongoing Covid-19 issues – Woodhall Spa will host three events simultaneously.

As well as the senior men and women doubling up in the one event and the women’s series taking place (both on the Hotchkin Course) a joint boys’ and girls’ event is also being hosted on the Bracken Course.

All three events involve a round robin format featuring England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and will be staged from tomorrow and conclude on Friday.

That makes it a busy scene this week at the home of England Golf – and creates a unique environment for the Williamson family to play in cheered on by other family and friends.

“It’s very special and not something I thought would happen,” admitted Amelia who is a student at Florida State University.

“I’m so pleased and grateful that it has happened this way.

“I’m not sure if this has ever been done before.

“Because of this new format, I’m pretty sure a mum and daughter won’t ever have played at the same venue at the same time in Home Internationals.

“I hope it is set in history and I am excited about the week.

“Mum was named first and I was hoping I’d be picked to be there at the same time.

“Even if I hadn’t been picked, I’d have been there to cheer on mum.”

The Williamson family come into the Home Internationals in good form.

Earlier this year Tracey was crowned English Senior Women’s Stroke Play champion at Hayling Island.

Last week, Amelia made the semis of the English Women’s Amateur Championship at Moortown.

For dad/husband Mark, the prospect of watching two of his family competing for England at the same time is something to cherish.

Tracey explained: “It’s a special moment for us as a family.

“Mark gets quite emotional about it all – I think that’s what happens when you get a bit older.

“When I won the county championships that was the start of it all.”

Amelia added with a laugh: “Dad is gutted that he’s the only one who hasn’t represented England or Great Britain!

“Actually – that’s not true – he’s actually quite selfless and would rather we had this opportunity.

“My sister Victoria is miles away from the golfing world – you couldn’t get further away.

“She’s a former cyclist turned GB&I bobsleigh competitor!”

And Tracey joked: “She’s not patient like me and Amelia!”

For Tracey this is uncharted territory, but for Amelia there is a good vibe returning to an event which brings back good memories.

Amelia said: “I played Home Internationals for both the girls’ and women’s squads.

“In my last year in the girls I played all the games and was unbeaten.

“Hopefully, we can both go out and play well and help England to win again.”
